Finger Waves

Health and Safety
  • Clean washed hands must always be the first thing before touching client
  • Hair is tied back at all times
  • Model should be wearing a apron or protected clothing
  • Must check whether there is any contraindications such as sickness or infection

In class we were taught two different methods on creating finger waves. A method using a tong and then pinning until cool and a technique with the method of shaping the wave onto wet hair. The process of finger waving is more technical and does take time to perfect.
                     Tong Method

Equipment needed for Tong Method

  • Pintail comb
  • Paddle Brush
  • Curling Tongs
  • Sectioning Clips
Method
  • Section the hair using pintail, front of the hair
  • Starting at top curl the hair curl in a downwards direction. Once cool pin into place with a section clip.
  • repeat down the front of the hair
  • Once complete and cooled take clips out and brush through with paddle brush
  • Following the direction of the hair place the sectioning clips into the sections of hair where the hair changes directions into natural curves
  • wait for 5 minutes for clips to set hair and remove.

Wet Hair
Equipment needed for wet hair method
  • Pintail comb
  • Water Spray
  • Sectioning clips

Method

  • Wet the hair and brush through
  • Place your finger across the top of the hair to start the process. Using the pintail in the other hand, place it on the head upright making sure placement is correct. Once placement is correct drag the comb in the direction that you want the hair to go and push up.
  • With your index finger and middle finger grasp the pushed up part of hair between both fingers and hold it there for a moment. Clip the hair with section comb across the bottom of the small waved section.
  • Continue down the hair ensuring that the waves are even and correctly made.
The waves do originally take time to correct the placement but once correct the hair can be completed from just the fringe to the entire head.
