Brand Evaluation

Chanel is one of the main if not the main fashion houses out there. The fashion house is more like a dynasty and lifestyle to its many devoted buyers and collectors in both fashion and beauty. Choosing Chanel as a brand wasn't difficult to decide I have always been a fan of the iconic styles that grace the catwalk the brand is timeless having been around for over a hundred years starting of course with Coco Chanel in Paris. The collectors of the clothes don't just buy into the company but they buy something that will only raise highly in value and should be cherished for ever.

I decided mainly to choose Chanel as my project brand because of how such a iconic luxurious brand can still be creative and present in the current age with creative director Karl Lagerfeld really bringing the brand to a artistic and loved standard with the use of creative fashion shows that feel more like huge film sets to beautiful clothing designs that embrace what Chanel herself created with the iconic jacket that can still be seen on the runway with similar structures to clearly inspired pieces of tweed or silk that shapes the clothing.

Chanel's style is timeless with the model's making the clothing seem effortless within editorial and catwalk campaigns. How can such detailed clothing still seem luxurious but youthful and wanted by any age. The Chanel editorial's were something fun to create but with such a choice of inspirations to go for sometimes it was difficult to decide which Chanel look I should go for wanting to present the brand in a high standard within my own work.

I've always loved Chanel which made the research on the project enjoyable and interesting finding out more about the brand and looking into the connections that are created from previous campaigns and shoots to other campaigns. The best website I found for finding information out about Chanel that was also very present with the information about shows and makeup looks was Vogue; I found Vogue to be great giving images and detailed articles from the front row. Looking into Chanel beauty was something that I hadn't really delved  into having had a few items as presents it was never a first choice to really buy for; however looking into recent collections I wish I had. The LA sunrise collection is a collection of perfect spring colours. I was also surprised into the product prices especially with such a huge company and fashion house that is Chanel the price's are luxurious but reasonable and cheaper then other fashion brands like Tom Ford or Marc Jacobs.

Overall I'm really happy with how I've done in this project choosing Chanel was definitely the best choice as now I know more about the brand and how they shoot campaigns and the patterns and styles that they like to follow which has helped in my shoots and finding the correct inspiration. Not only have I added more to my creative portfolio but I've created a project in where I've found out about a huge fashion house that is a giant part of the entire fashion world.  Chanel beauty is accessible to anyone but owning a garment from Chanel is something in which you'd keep forever and cherish maybe feeling the passion that Lagerfeld clearly feels for his brand.

Project Evaluation

This project has been a big test on time management and creativity. Choosing Chanel as my brand was definitely the right choice for my project as I felt I could push the shoots in more of a artistic style. Doing the project of Beauty is Boring earlier into this university year has definitely helped with this project from lesson times such as dewy skin and applying a great base for shoots but I feel like both project's have really pushed me creativity. In my first year I wasn't confident with my makeup and felt shyer working on a range of models which definitely held me back. This project and year in all has definitely expanded my creativity and confidence with finding models and application of makeup.

In lesson's I feel like I've become more confident in hair styling and definitely in lesson time where we've really been looking into skin and applying base's. I feel like the year has had a lot more free reign with the makeup but I do look forward to going back for third year and having more creative lesson's

At the beginning of the project I think I found it difficult to push all my idea's for different shoots into really connecting them well to Chanel this was before of course fashion week and shows like the Korea Seoul show which I found as huge inspiration's for my editorial shoot which was a favourite. Finding out information about catwalk shows and editorial and beauty campaigns was definitely helped by the help of Vogue online and fashion magazines such as Vogue and pop which though different have great Chanel editorial prints in. My favourite part of the project and what I enjoyed doing the most was probably planning the shoots and the makeup especially the Shoot 2 and Shoot 5 which are favourites as they are artistic and the location's I think are really interesting.

New techniques that I've learnt doing this project would definitely learning more technical things such as within photography and photoshop which I've grown confident with from all the shoots that I've been doing for the project. I definitely think though that this entire year has given me a lot more confidence with my work. A technique that I want to definitely learn more about would probably be developing my photography skills more which I'm interested in.

The project's been really successful for me because of how creative and vast the theme's of each shoot have been though obviously all for Chanel they are different in the genre sense and feel of the photographs. Choosing Chanel as my project was definitely the best decision for me. Chanel I've discovered even more is how creative the brand is even more so then I had already anticipated. I have true respect for the clothes and what Coco Chanel started and what Karl Lagerfeld has been doing with the fashion house.

I've noticed that I have started having a style with my work and like to be creative with the makeup which have definitely been developed with the project. I think the one thing I need to improve about is probably just shooting more as in grabbing a camera and finding even more great locations to shoot in.

LA Sunrise Shoot 6

Here is the final image for the LA Sunrise inspired advertisement. The colouring of the shoot I feel really works and on the same colour scheme of the collection which I've taken a personal liking to. The shoot I feel looks really 80's with the blonde hair and background of the water and sunset edited together. Overall I'm extremely happy with this shoot and the edit which done with help with my post production assistant for the shoot Georgina Sreeves.

LA Sunshine Advertising "Day" shoot 6

Mood Board

My final mood board for this project was based around the advertisement of the Spring/Summer LA Sunrise collection which Chanel debuted this year. For my mood board I have looked at the imagery of the campaign and use of colours that that also included. Though not shooting in studio I want the photo to be bright and colourful editing the backdrop out to create a strong summery colour palette such as the one over this mood board thats been created with layering and changing the opacity. The hair will be bright blonde and will suit the makeup and help create more of a summer vibe with the shoot and will be styled with salt spray to add volume much like in the beach hair lesson we learnt in the studio.

Face Chart's

Each chart has been designed from the research of looking into the collections colour palettes I think its important to create work where the colour is matching and believable to what I wanted over all from the advertisement.

In the top image I've gone for more of a similar chart to whats advertised on the Chanel website with product information on how to achieve the look. My own look though the makeup will be make using my products with more pinky tones in the eye shadowing that will be pressed on to amplify the pigment and final look for the camera.

This design has been inspired by the colours in the La sea with rich turquoises and blues; The look will be very highlighted with the eye shadowing and highlighting on the skin thats blended towards the bronzer. I want the final image to look very summery and glowing. The lip colour is interesting and I think pops out like in the campaign .

The depth and colouring of the eyeshadow in this design I really like as it creates shading into the eye. I've noticed that Chanel have created a similar eye though with purple tones instead of my chosen green. Green is a key colour in the collection but not given as one of the potential looks to recreate. I've decided to go for green as I find it very fresh and will work with the coral orange lips which are just a illamasqua cream blush.

La Sunrise Collection

The collection debuted by Chanel this year is a collection that I have really anticipated for release. The collection will be inspired for a advertising shoot which I plan to shoot as one of my last pieces of the project

The makeup packaging is the luxurious black compact cases and lipstick that Chanel makeup always seems to have the prestigious quality to it. Owning some Chanel pieces myself in my own personal makeup theres definitely a luxurious divide with the branding compared to others. The makeup is a collectors piece. The boxes themselves make the casing of the products and look sleek and black with a high quality finish.

The compact in particular for this collection is a real interesting piece and has ribbon like sectioning inside it in the colour tones are a range of peach and pinks infitting with a strong pink tones of the range. I really like how they dress up the makeup looking at the range online the theme is apparent with Chanel quoting that the collect inspired by LA is from

"Discover a colour collection that reveals the vibrant mood of an endless Los Angeles summer. Flashes of purple, teal and green capture the city’s carefree spirit, while a dreamy spectrum of pink, coral and raspberry shades evoke the California morning skies."

The main makeup design that features in the campaign on the model is also shown on the website with the products and even a tutorial on how to create the look; I think this shows that Chanel are really trying to show inclusion with their products and applying to mass audiences. There is another design with a softer pink look that is more of a day look compared to this dramatic blue eyeliner look. It's interesting how this look though a advertisement has clear similarities with catwalk looks and even my own catwalk look with the blue liner. In both looks the product of the Creation exclusive sunkiss ribbon blush palette is featured this makes me come to the conclusion that this palette is the main collectors piece of the over all collection.

The short film created for the collection is a artistic and interesting piece of advertising. At the beginning of the short clip the edit of the model flashing in and out of neon colouring is really interesting to watch and something that looks more like a art film. The edit will be something to definitely look at and explore when it comes to the shoot that will be inspired by this campaign.

Shoot 5 Editorial Day final Images

Here are my final two images of the shoot that I decided to use. I'm super happy with how the editorial images turned out. The location of the shoot really creates a contrast with the styling and makeup for my model. The makeup on the brows was hard to achieve using eyeliner but I'm happy with what they look like. In the editing process I've just added some more contrast to really brighten the colourings and edited the skin to remove any dryness. I think that the over all image does look high fashion and reminds me of something that could be seen in daze or pop magazine which I'm proud of. The hair also though simple has turned out well from the accessories in the hair to the volume that the hair has give and structure to the over all look. I decided to use white writing for the Chanel logo because I really wanted it to stand out against the heavy man made background.

Shoot 5 Editorial Mood Boards and chosen Face chart

Mood Board

The mood board for this shoot was by far the funnest to create for myself. I feel extremely happy reflecting on this board as for me its basically a plan of what I wanted to achieve from the shoot itself. Along with my first shoot this was one that came to me pretty soon in the project but I really took my time in planning what I wanted to achieve from it.

The shoot itself though editorial is based on the Chanel Seoul catwalk show for this years season of resort. The dress I'm gonna put my model in is from The White Pepper and I think looks high fashion and could pass as part of the Resort collection with the pink and texture of the dress. Looking into Manga also with the inspiration of the Korean show I really like the sailor moon styles and hair which is a feature of the characters. For my model which is also on the facial chart I will have the hair in pigtails parted down the middle and held in place and accessorised with pink bobbles which I've brought already.

For the location like in the newest Spring/Summer 16 campaign featured in urban locations in New York my shoot will also be against at backdrop that in very Urban and industrial. Theres a location in Southampton Portal thats full of shipping containers of a range of different colours which will look great against the pink of my models dress and the almost doll like makeup.

Face Chart

This is the facial chart that I've decided to use for my editorial shoot. Out of the three that I designed inspired by the Seoul Resort fashion show this was my favourite and the one that I wanted to finish with more detail indicating what I wanted the hair to look like in my mind. Pinks and light purples with be focused on the eyes with a liner encasing the eyebrows that are simply brushed to finish. The skin is a even coverage that is light on the face, the foundation will be light for a youthful look.

Face charts inspired by Chanel Cruise show Seoul

The Chanel Cruise S/S 16 Seoul show was a favourite for me so I've decided one of my shoots will be based/inspired around it. The makeup for the show was a fun mix on Chanel the top fashion how showing its diversity both culture wise and in fashion standards but also in representing a increasingly popular movement of the K-pop. head makeup artist Tom Pecheux really brought the idea of real life Manga to the catwalk with his makeup creations from the bold brows that are extreme in a way but still completely formed perfectly. The lashes for the look are interesting as some models have dots under the eyes and some have what seems to be false eyelashes at the sides of eyes the looks are both different but both accentuate the eye.

This design I really liked creating. Simple even coverage on the skin with a slight peach bronzing on the cheeks. The lips are a bold orange colour which like the neon pink seen on the Seoul runway I believe the look works because of the similar colour palettes. The liner on the brows is also slightly different and encases the brow joining up at the points. The eye lashes start from the tear ducts and would be created using false eyelashes.

Going for a more unique my own take on the makeup this has been created with the influences of the show and adding green for a more oriental spring fresh look. The lips are a bright pink most probably in the Mac lipstick shade of St.Germain. The eyebrows are also a different touch being single thick lines that cut across the brows into opposite angles. I decided to change the look up a bit to explore and design more I could do with the brows.

This look was the most natural in a sense to the rest. Inspired by the Seoul's makeup inspiration of Manga comics and the artistic and range of characters that an audience can come across I thought of adding detailing to the brows in a different way this time in small circles inspired by mostly Japanese Manga comic and television show Sailor Moon with the blonde brows also and detailing on brows. A line would be formed under the brow to add more structure. The lashes themselves like the first design are cut to shorten dramatically but this time stuck to the ends of the bottom eyelashes like on some of the models for the Chanel Show.

This look is the most developed because its simply my favourite design; its clearly inspired by the Catwalk show with the detailing on the eyes and base coverage with slight blush. The brows are more filled and finish connecting at the point of the brows like a previous design. The eye shadowing that I thought of using was a pink blush and shading from light purples and pinks that I wanted to match with potential clothing ideas and the accessories in the hair that I have draw up and brought. I like the design so much I plan on using it for a now editorial look that makeup is soley inspired by the campaign. My model will have dark/black hair as I believe it will suit the pink playful colour scheming. The hair like on the catwalk will be parted in the middle and detailing on the sides of the head with the spiral pink bobbles being a feature on the hair.

Chanel Advertising

A main reason why I decided to chose Chanel for my project was because of the creativity and range I could go with the editorial work. I was very excited to look and explore what sort of editorial worK I could go for. I want to look at using location's instead of studio space for the photographs as I've noticed Chanel like to use a range of different locations and colour themes for there shoots. I particularly like the idea of using clashing back drops with the clothing to contrast the norm or modern world against luxurious clothing, I think this add's more personality to the work. Chanel also uses a lot of symmetry with their imagery with many of the double spread images having a divide in the central photographic wise such as the tin lining and road markings of the Spring 2016 campaign.

Chanel Resort '16 Cruise Seoul

The makeup of this show is truly mesmerising the influences of that are almost doll like a real favourite of the current collections that Chanel has recently show cased for a few seasons. The show was held in Seoul's Dongaemun design plaza and present the newest resort collection to a impressive and fashion influential audience from Tilda Swinton to Gisele.

The colours of the show were very bright and in fitting with K-pop culture that is sweeping South Korean youth trends and music. The show was probably held not only for Chanel to show case in Korea but because of the K pop movement and fashion that can be seen there and Japan; both countries are really starting to head fashion styling's. The clothing of the show really resembles how Karl Lagerfeld has adapted and changed Chanel, the clothing was almost abstract art in its versatility and palette's. Some of the clothing though on a strong coloured palette is still materialised from classic Chanel favourites such as tweed for the Chanel style jackets and matching skirts to silks for the shirts that are displayed in both busy materials to more soft simple designs that having matching jackets or cardigans. In fact its impressive how many different materials and patterns are happening in the show, its very busy and colourful; I'm sure most of the audience had long lists of wants by the end of the performance. The mens clothing some of the pieces are made from matching patterns as the women's clothing such as a very busy jacket and trousers; the other pieces in the show are more classical with white loose yacht style pants with usually some design of jacket to feature with.

The makeup itself is my favourite part of the entire show. Extremely doll like the models themselves looked dainty and innocent as they made their ways around the catwalk; the feeling of the makeup like the show overall was inspired by current fashion and the movements of K pop and Manga. The eyeliner has be done in a way thats not the norm but in pattern with Chanel previous shows. Chanel do love a strong brow so the idea of literally lining the brow isn't to surprising; It's surprising how nice it looks on the models. The lipstick is a bright neon in fitting with the colour scheme and overall look of the show. The hair has been created with black plaited head pieces over the middle parted swept back hairstyles reminding me again of doll like creatures. The skin is dewy and looks not to heavy on the models youthful faces; a small amount of highlight is added to near the tear duct of the eyes highlighting the models eyes and creating a more wide eyed innocent look. The male models in the show have more of a gentle look with swept back hair thats been allowed to naturally start to part and the makeup is just perfect coverage with the accessory of a hoop earring; facial hair can be seen on one of the models.

Shoot 4 Editorial "Night"

The final imagery for this shoot is one of my favourites in its final form the use of creating symmetry in the edit has come from the research into previous editorial campaigns and their use of creating some kind of middle focus to the picture. I like the composition of the image and think it was really interesting to capture my model out of her window. The window itself is extremely old and victorian which I think adds a lot of character to the picture, the angling of the window created by replaying the picture next to each other makes a pattern that is really unique. The makeup also I'm really happy with because I see it as a clear version of the Chanel Couture S/S 16 show but obviously done by me in a editorial form which I think works great. The hair was more tricky to create as I want the hair to be natural with the pressed flowers pinned into the front of the hair almost to encase part of the forehead, I found it difficult to adapt the flowers to curve more around the face after I had pressed them flat for quite a while so trying to curve them without breaking them was difficult. I do think the overall image though is high fashion and feels artistic from the eyeliner and window detailing.

Shoot 4 Editorial Night mood board and facial chart

The mood Board

The mood board for my editorial work has been based on the Chanel catwalk show for the collection of S/S 16 Couture which see's Chanel using a romantic makeup look that holds natural coverage pink lips and a dramatic eyeliner that is slick and stands out against the detailed fabrics and textures of the clothing. This show has been a inspiration in other shoots I think I took so much from it because of the created set and how the eyeliner which could be seen as influences from Cleopatra or as creative markings which I believe makeup is as a art form. I've placed roses on top of the design because of my wish to add some flowers I've pressed onto the hair.

The facial Charts

The designs for my shoot are all very similar as I already knew what I wanted tonal wise within the coverage for the skin and the bronzer and blush that will  be on the skin. The lips are a brushed pink lip that will be in a number of different pinks with the design I'm going for which is the bottom due to it being my favourite eyeliner and the most similar to the Chanel show. The hair will be parted in the middle with natural hair and flowers pinned pressed flowers at the front of the hair and slightly covering the face. I want the overall shoot to look romantic and be a editorial take on the Couture S/S 16 show.
